Another round of heavy rain before Mother Nature turns off the faucet and cranks up the heat

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Good Wednesday evening everyone. It’s been another rather active afternoon with showers and thunderstorms popping up across south central and northeastern Nebraska with a half dozen or so severe thunderstorm warnings already having been issued. Additional strong to severe storms are possible before 10pm this evening. The biggest threat will be damaging wind gusts of 60-70mph. Large hail and very heavy rainfall will be the other threats. Additional showers and thunderstorms are expected around the area through the evening and overnight hours with a lower severe threat. The main concern as we get later into the evening with be the chance for more localized flooding. We already saw some from last night’s storms in Central and Southwest Nebraska. Some of these same areas may see more heavy rainfall. Any training of storms could enhance that threat. A flood watch has been issued from southwest through central into Northeast Nebraska until Friday morning. Some showers may linger into early Thursday morning over the eastern half of Nebraska.

Tomorrow will be a chance to dry out for a large part of the area. A cold front will be pushing through southeastern parts of the area and will be the focal point for additional showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. High temperatures on Thursday will range from around 80° in Northeast Nebraska to around 90° in North Central Kansas. Friday look to be a dry day as temperatures heat up. That said, there may be some thunderstorms later in the day, mainly across the Sandhills and severe weather will be possible. High temperatures will range from the upper 80s northeast to the mid 90s southwest. Saturday will be the hottest day for the area with highs ranging from the lower 90s Northeast Nebraska to the upper 90s in Southwest Nebraska and North Central Kansas. Heat index values could be over 100°.

A slight chance of thunderstorms will return Saturday night as a cold front begins to move into Northwest Nebraska. That front sliding into the area Sunday will start to drop temperatures a little. Highs will range from the low/mid 80s northwest to the low/mid 90s south and southeast. A better chance for more thunderstorms and severe weather will come Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Behind the front, temperatures will cool down slightly for a couple of days. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s Monday. Highs will be somewhat similar Tuesday in the mid to upper 80s and lower 90s. Temperatures will creep up later in the week as the Independence Day holiday approaches.
